THERE'S a political revolution afoot. Russell Brand isn't involved this time, though. Instead, a formidable force is quietly and calmly gathering momentum, ready to launch not just on the national platform but, if its co-founder has her way, the world stage.

Some 400 people packed Conway Hall last night for a fundraiser for the Women's Equality Party, the new non-partisan force led by the redoubtable Sandi Toksvig and Catherine Mayer, journalist and biographer of Prince Charles. Toksvig gave up her Radio 4 show to found the WE, a "fantastic group of women and indeed men who have decided that enough is enough and we need to make some changes", after deciding that after a lifetime poking fun at politics, "instead of making jokes about it, I need to participate".

You can't keep a brilliant comedian down, of course, and true to form she led last night's appeal with a comic riff on the women history forgot. No danger of those damp squibs politicians normally pass off as "jokes" with the WE. …
