At Last, a Clean Slate in Troubled Tower Hamlets

JOHN Biggs's convincing win for Labour in the Tower Hamlets mayoral election yesterday will, we hope, draw a line under a terrible period for the East End borough. Mr Biggs beat his closest rival, the independent Rabina Khan, in the contest triggered in April when High Court judge Richard Mawrey overturned the 2014 mayoral election result, won by Lutfur Rahman. In a damning judgment, Mr Mawrey found Rahman responsible for corruption, voting fraud and religious intimidation, ejecting him from office and banning him from standing in the re-run.

For Mr Biggs, the victory will be all the sweeter following his appalling treatment by Rahman's henchmen: Mr Mawrey judged that in 2014 the Labour candidate had been the victim of a "ruthless and dishonest campaign" to portray him as a racist. Much was still at stake yesterday despite Rahman's removal: Ms Khan was a protegee of the former mayor, a member of his Tower Hamlets First party and his personally endorsed successor. …
