Jaguars Notebook; Fowler Undergoes ACL Surgery

Jaguars rookie defensive end Dante Fowler underwent surgery Wednesday to repair the torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

James Andrews performed the operation. Kevin Kaplan, the Jaguars head physician, was on hand to observe the surgery. Jaguars associate athletic trainer Robert Hoenshel also accompanied Fowler to Pensacola.

Fowler, the Jaguars first round pick (third overall) on April 30, was injured in the opening hour of the team's first rookie minicamp practice on May 8.

The Jaguars' plan for Fowler is to have him rehabilitate the injury at EverBank Field so he can still be around the team.

DEFENSE, BORTLES AHEAD OF LAST YEAR

Coach Gus Bradley said the Jaguars are ahead of where they were last year after the first week of organized team activities (OTAs).

"It feels better to me, it does,'' he said. "Defensively, you feel it more like the guys really understand their responsibilities.

"Offensively, for where we're at with a new offense and the amount that is in, I feel really good. I don't know how it compares. I just know they're picking it up pretty good right now.''

Bradley said quarterback Blake Bortles is "completely different now than he was last year at this time'' in his rookie season. He also said the offense did a lot of third-down work during the drills.

Since they were practicing for the third consecutive day, Bradley shaved about 30 minutes off of Thursday's session. The second week of OTAs begin on Monday.

YOUNG RECEIVERS, OLD COACH

The Jaguars don't have a big-name veteran at the position, but wide receiver coach Jerry Sullivan likes the group of young receivers the team has.

"Do we have a drum major per se?'' Sullivan said. "No, but we have a lot of guys I trust and that's a big part of it.''

Sullivan said it's important to set an example with so many young receivers on the team. Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns were all rookies last season. …
