HUNDREDS of staff are gearing up to welcome the first patients to the new PS95m Cramlington hospital in 24 hours time.

Tomorrow, the country's first purpose-built hospital specifically dedicated to emergency care, will finally open its doors.

At the same time, changes will take place in emergency care at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's general hospitals in Hexham, North Tyneside and Wansbeck which will become 24-hour walk-in services providing urgent care for less serious conditions.

The opening of the new Cramlington-based hospital has been touted as heralding a new era in emergency care and is being viewed as a template for future developments across the country.

Dr Chris Biggin, clinical director for the Trust, said: "With just 24-hours left before our new hospital opens its doors, it is really important that people know what the changes mean to them and their family.

"We have worked really hard to make sure we spread our message far and wide and people know about our new hospital and the introduction of 24-hour walk-in services providing urgent care at our general hospitals.

"This is the culmination of many years' work led by our clinicians and, as tomorrow draws ever closer, we continue to remind people of the changes set to take place as we look forward to our new model of emergency care coming into force."

The hospital has cost PS75m to build - plus PS5m to improve surrounding roads and PS15m for specialised equipment. It will have 210 acute beds spread across seven specialist wards.

State-of-the-art scanning equipment has been installed, including an MRI scanner, two CT scanners, four digital x-ray systems and three digital mobile x-ray machines which are some of the most advanced in the world.

The new hospital also includes a series of specialist wards including a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and a birthing centre. …
