Food provides the nutrients and fuel that our body needs to function properly. The body needs food to create energy, for movement, to promote growth and repair itself.

Reading labels on food packaging

When you buy packaged food products, have a look at the labelling on the packet. The information on food labels can help us make healthy and safe food choices.

Food labels are included on most food products that are packaged.

They tell you what ingredients or additives are in the food.

They give you nutritional information about what nutrients the food contains, how much of each nutrient there is and the food's fat and protein content. Labels also tell you the name of the manufacturer, the country in which it was made and shows the use by or best before dates.

Here's a few tips on how to read food labels and work out what's best to eat.

All ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, including added water.

The list may also show the percentage of the key ingredients.

The nutritional information panels provide information on - energy (kilojoules), protein, total fat, saturated fat, total carbohydrates, sugars, sodium and dietary fibre. Some manufacturers might decide to include other nutrients too.

On the nutritional information panel look for lower saturated fat, lower sodium, lower sugar and higher fibre. …
