It's Been a Good Year - No Bones about It

HAVING his patients evacuated from the Gladstone Mater Hospital on Tuesday night wasn't the ideal way to celebrate the end of his first year at Gladstone.

But despite the minor hiccup, caused by a smoky mechanical fault, it has been a successful 12 months for orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Gerard Kilian who has performed more than 600 procedures including 60 joint replacements.

"It's been quite busy," he said.

"We have seen a lot of patients injured from working in industry, young people with dirt bikes and also touch football and roller derby injuries."

He said bringing in a new service was challenging.

"There were capital costs, equipment, technology, training and meeting the general practitioners and patients," he said.

"I've made some good friends, made people happy and contributed to them being better off with no pain and suffering."

He admitted moving to a regional area had been difficult. …
