I WRITE in response to the media coverage appearing in the Tweed Daily News regarding the Murwillumbah District Hospital (MDH) Birthing Service.

Contrary to reports carried in the paper, the MDH Maternity Service is not closed. Antenatal and Postnatal Services associated with normal births and the caesarean birth services are still being provided at MDH.

Also, it needs to be made clear that the Neonatal on-call roster role is not a stand-alone position.

Before a general practitioner (GP)/Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) is eligible to join the GP/VMO Neonatal roster, that GP/VMO must have an appointment to MDH.

Every GP/VMO, who has an appointment to MDH was contacted and was asked whether he/she was willing to join the Neonatal on-call roster. All the GP/VMOs with appointments to MDH declined to join the Neonatal on-call roster.

The MDH GP/VMO establishment is currently full. Therefore, there has been no capacity to recruit new GP/VMOs to MDH. …
