Kilty out to Claim Team Glory with GB and NI in Russia; ATHLETICS

Article excerpt

TEESSIDE Tornado Richard Kilty will fly the flag for Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Russia this weekend at the European Team Championships.

European indoor 60m champion Kilty is among the 46-strong team in action during the two-day event in Cheboksary.

Fresh from running a personal best time of 10.05 seconds in this month's Sainsbury's Grand Prix, Kilty will be in good spirits ahead of the 100m event.

He is joined in the team by the fastest British woman in history, Dina Asher-Smith, and Olympic high jump bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz. Grabarz is donning a GB and NI vest for the first time since major surgery last year on a long-term knee injury.

But Britain's best hopes lie with Kilty, Asha Philip and Danny Talbot in the sprints - and the team has strong hopes of claiming maximum team points.

It won't be easy, though, with sub-10 and sub-20 French star Christophe Lemaitre lining up in both the 100m and 200m.

Norweigan Ezinne Okparaebo and Ukraine sprinter Nataliya Pohrebnyak will also be heavilyfancied to perform well in Russia. …
