Zac Could Help Electrify the 2016 Mayoral Race

ZAC Goldsmith MP's confirmation today that he will enter the 2016 mayoral race is good news for the Tories but for the whole contest too. Mr Goldsmith consulted voters in his Richmond Park constituency to see if they approved of him standing for the Tory candidacy. Today he has announced their support. His move cements his position as Tory frontrunner, ahead of deputy mayor Stephen Greenhalgh, London Assembly Tory leader Andrew Boff, MEP Syed Kamall, entrepreneur Ivan Massow and former footballer Sol Campbell. The party has not yet announced its schedule for the selection process.

Yet Mr Goldsmith's entry has already had an effect. Sadiq Khan MP, one of the Labour frontrunners, has switched his position on Heathrow, reversing his previous support for expansion, and today calls for full pedestrianisation of Oxford Street. Meanwhile, there have been predictions that his main rival, Tessa Jowell, could be damaged by her support for a third runway. …
