Why We Love Life in the Region; Living in the North East Is Great, Explains the Journal's GRAEME WHITFIELD. and Today We Bring You 100 of the Many Reasons Why It's Truly Great Up North

Article excerpt

Byline: GRAEME WHITFIELD

LIVING in the North East is great - and here's 100 reasons why.

From top businesses to TV stars, majestic buildings to unspoilt countryside, the North East is the match of pretty much anywhere in the world when it comes to quality of life.

And yet we either take all this for granted or forget just how wonderful we are, because we are always not the best in the world at celebrating our region.

We recognised this 11 years ago when we set out to compile the first 100 Reasons Why It's Great Up North.

Sick of seeing headlines on the front of the paper about how bad things were, we challenged our staff to find 100 reasons why things were actually rather good. And so we did (and then some).

The list has been re-visited four times since and last year celebrated its 10th anniversary. Now we're doing the list for the fifth time.

By rights we should be up to 500, but, of course, a number of items have recurred each time we've done the list. Any itemization of what's great about the North East that didn't in some form include the Roman Wall or Durham Cathedral, for example, would be rather shoddy, while things like Beamish, the Great North Run and Sage Gateshead have always been there or thereabouts.

But what it isn't meant to be - and couldn't be, even if we tried - is a definitive list of the best 100 things in the North East. It's a snapshot of some things that we think are great, today, and would be different if we did it tomorrow, if some different people contributed to the list - or if we weren't in such a hurry to get down the pub.

Your idea of the best things about the region will be different - not entirely, we hope, because we think you'll agree with most of it.

So if we've missed something, feel free to let us know and we might include in the 100 Reasons Why It's Great Up North version six, whenever that may be. …
