Players Respond to Challenge; Coach's White Board Gee-Up Lifting Spirit's Goal Scoring Tally

Article excerpt

WESTERN Spirit football coach Nick Paterson has discovered a tactic that seems to be working.

In recent games, he's been writing the names of players who haven't scored on a white board.

Three weeks ago, it worked with Damien Andison netting his first goal of the season against Newmarket.

In the local derby with Ipswich City, Joel Hancock and Corey Lucas got on the goal scorer's list.

Another player Andy Jarrett has come close to joining them.

"He (Jarrett) came forward late in the game (against the Bulls) and he crossed one instead of having a shot,'' Paterson said.

"I thought that would have just really capped it off if he had put one in the back of the net too.''

In last weekend's game against Park Ridge, Jarrett had another chance when he stepped up to take a late penalty. He missed.

Maybe this weekend Andy.

Telling statistics

SPEAKING of goals and stats, regional footballers feature in some naughty and nice results coming into the business end of the season.

Western Pride captain Jesse Rigby has the most yellow cards in his team with five so far. He also received a controversial red card against Roar's Youth team earlier in the National Premier Leagues season.

Teammate Nielen Brown has four yellows, ahead of Gab Hawash and Lincoln Rule on three.

Rule though is joint team top scorer (four), along with Harry Sawyer.

Todd Norris has netted three goals for Pride with Jay Kitching scoring the same amount before switching to Western Spirit recently.

In the Brisbane Premier League competition, the Ipswich Knights' top goal scorers are Lucas Wilson and Taiga Ishikura with four apiece.

Those in foul strife include Devon Munn (four). The BPL's top yellow card getter is Wolves player Peter Gaffrey (six).

Back on the goal scoring front, Munn has contributed two after joining the Knights from Western Pride.

The BPL's top goal getter is Michele Lipari, from Logan, with 14.

In Capital League 2, the Golden Boot award looks headed the way of Souths United player Joshua Anderson. …
