Tax 'Arrest Warrant' a Scam

A WOLLONGBAR man is reeling after receiving a mysterious phone call saying there was a warrant out for his arrest and that his house was under surveillance.

The man - who did not want to be named - said the caller explained he was from the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions.

"He said I would be arrested, that my house was being watched," he said.

"They told me I was being prosecuted for tax fraud and gave me a phone number to ring."

But it's all part of an elaborate scam in the lead-up to tax time.

It is currently being investigated by the Australian Federal Police.

SCAMwatch has issued a warning, saying scammers are falsely claiming to be from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions or Australian Tax Office.

"Scammers have recently been calling Australians telling them that there is a warrant out for their arrest," a spokesperson said. …
