MARITIME lovers scaled the rigging of the Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos when it docked at Northumberland.

The impressive vessel opened its decks to the public on Saturday after sailing into North East waters.

She arrived into the Port of Blyth with 40 students from Emmanuel Schools Foundation on board, including pupils from Bede Academy in the town, following their 10 night voyage from Southampton.

The 200ft vessel is the biggest to be built in the UK in a century and the open day gave the public a chance to step on board, explore her magnifi-cent decks and learn more about a modern day square rigged brig.

And the sun shone as keen sailers scaled the rigging in a sponsored climb. The ship's visit is ahead of the world's most impressive sea-faring vessels sailing into the town's port as it host's the globally renowned Tall Ships Regatta next year.

The three-day event is set to bring over 100,000 visitors to the region and boost the economy by up to PS25m. …
