If you are reading this July edition of Culture on the day of publication - which is to say June 30 - then tonight's the night we celebrate the region's creativity. The Journal Culture Awards first took place in 2007, rewarding the best of 2006. That inaugural event unfolded at Northern Stage in Newcastle, our generous host for the first three years.

Since then this red letter occasion has taken place at the Gala Theatre in Durham, Durham Cathedral and Sage Gateshead.

This year, for the ninth awards ceremony, we move to the atmospheric Sunderland Minster, a Grade II* listed building with a long history.

We are very much looking forward to the blend of old and new as some of the creative people who made a splash in 2014 step into the spotlight to receive their awards - specially made this year by artist Corinne Lewis-Ward, from Gateshead Among the top notch performers tonight will be Nadine Shah, Hyde and Beast, Richard Dawson and writer David Almond, reading an extract from his libretto of the eagerly awaited Opera for Sunderland. …
