AMARXIST economist at the heart of Greece's radical leftwing Syriza Government studied at Newcastle University.

Professor Giorgos Stathakis, who is the country's Economics Minister, has been central to the country's turbulent talks on how to manage the country's debt.

Back in 1983 however he was labouring over his PhD, entitled 'Industrial development and the regional problem: The case of Greece'.

And after yesterday's referendum on whether to accept creditors' bailout terms he was briefly tipped to become the country's Finance Minister after Yanis Varoufakis resigned from one of Syriza's most critical positions.

That post went to London educated Euclid Tsakalotos, but throughout talks with the European Union, Professor Stathakis has been a leading figure on the fight to resist the pension cuts and increased taxes creditors are insisting on for a bail-out deal.

However Sir Alan Beith, the former Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick, who taught at Newcastle University's politics department in the 1970s, said it was surprising that a Marxist economist would have emerged from the institution. …
