NORTHUMBERLAND collapsed late in the day in their Minor Counties Championship match at Hertfordshire and are staring another defeat in the face.

Battling back with the ball, North restricted Hertfordshire to a first-innings lead of 48 - and that only achieved by a last-wicket stand of 36.

Northumberland openers Jack Clark and Jack Jessop were then close to a second consecutive century opening stand - but Clark's departure for 40 sparked another collapse.

Jessop soon followed after registering his second 50 of the game and then four wickets fell for just 11 runs in six overs as North ended on a disappointing 124-5. Guilty of failing to build on their excellent start with the bat first up until Jacques du Toit's century rescued the innings, the second-innings capitulation could be fatal.

Du Toit followed up his 104 with the bat with a return of 4-43 with ball in hand as Hertfordshire were bowled out for 346 in the 90th over.

However, Northumberland's fragile batting was exposed by spin and while Du Toit remains at the crease it will take something special to turn the game on its head. …
