THE quality of Ben Looker's riding this year has been turning heads as far away as Albury.

It certainly did for border-region trainer Brett Cavanough, who has engaged Looker to ride Corsica Lad in the $50,000 James Kirby Quality (1000m) today.

Corsica Lad is one of two runners Cavanough has in the Kirby, along with Just A Bullet, ridden by Tegan Harrison.

The five-year-old gelding was sight unseen for Looker until he rode trackwork on the horse on Monday, but the jockey fancies his chances.

"He'll like the Kirby, if there's a bit of speed on, which there usually is," Looker said.

"He'll sit behind the speed and wait for an opening and he's virtually got no weight with 54kg."

Looker is making up for some lost opportunities this year after missing most of the 2014 carnival after a horror fall on Westlawn Day.

"I've missed a bit of racing with injuries and suspension," he said. "Since I've come back I've had a lot of support from local trainers. …
