Article excerpt

Byline: Sam Harris

THE fish of the week was a 26lb cod taken on mackerel strip by Keith Rider on board the North Shields charter boat JFK Two.

Two other fish, both over 20lb, were ling of 211/2lb, taken by Paul Bainbridge, and 20lb 5oz, taken by Ross Alexander. Plenty of other ling to 15lb were taken by the party aboard. The catch came from an offshore wreck. To contact skipper Alan, telephone 07808 684358.

Sunderland charter boat Sapphire has also had plenty of good cod and ling. Gary Peel from Sunderland took a ling of 13lb. Another ling of 13lb was taken by South Shields angler Mr Hancock. Michael Newton from Sunderland took a 10lb cod. Sunderland angler Wayne Smith landed a ling of 10lb.

All fish were taken on fresh mackerel and at times the anglers had difficulty getting through the shoals of mackerel to get to the better fish below. Contact skipper Peter on 07854 819924.

The Bob White Memorial Open Boat Competition which was held last Saturday out of Amble had an entry of 100 rods. Sadly, the fish didn't co-operate. The overall winner, with a cod of 5lb 12 1/2oz fishing from the Al Sharek skippered by Martin Smith, was John Graham from Prudhoe. The women's winner was Katie Henderson with a 2lb codling.
