GIFTED Bundjalung woman, Mavis Florence Davies, died on July 1, aged 94.

Born at Cabbage Tree Island on June 16, 1921, Mavis was the fifth child to Florence and Harry Combo.

She attended primary school on Cabbage Tree Island until she was in Year 6.

This is when her schooling ended. At that time Aboriginal children weren't allowed to attend school at Ballina.

She met and married Frank Davies in 1940 and had five children: Tex, Ross, Adrian, Darryl and Lurline.

Ross said he often asked his mum: "How come our sister is different from us four happy-go-lucky boys?"

"She'd laugh and say, 'maybe it's the milk; ask the milkman'," he said.

"I'd often ask mum, 'how come you seem to favour me above the other four?'

"She said, 'maybe it's because with the help of my sister, Eva, while your father ran two miles to get the midwife, we delivered you.

"When they arrived back we had you wrapped in cotton wool asleep in the top wardrobe drawer. …
