Hoare Steps in to Bat; Hervey Bay Cricket Association Needs Volunteers for Committee as Season Nears

HERVEY Bay Cricket Association has voted in the big guns ahead of the 2015-16 season.

Andrew Hoare is the new man in charge at HBCA after he returned from six years in the Australian Defence Force.

Hoare put his hand up to lead the gentleman's game when he returned to Hervey Bay, and arresting declining participation numbers may be a bigger challenge than what the artilleryman faced at Puckapunyal.

"I used to be involved years ago but I left to join the army," he said.

"I haven't played for a while. I did play some Twenty20 when I was here but the team I played for has folded now."

That last statement is a reality that faces not only regional cricket associations, but all regional sport.

While the number of people engaged in unorganised sport and physical activity (running, personal training, etc.) has increased, most organised sports, particularly in older age groups, have declined.

Cricket is one of those sports, and Hoare, along with the HBCA, has to find a way to buck the trend.

Solutions applied to other regions (with varied success) include:

increased focus on women's crickets, whether in main competition or a female-only format is up for discussion,

adjustment to junior cricket schedules, and

adjustment to format for senior cricket (limited overs, two-day, T20, etc. …
