Muchall Looks to Turn Up the Heat on Hants

GORDON Muchall thinks Durham can put Hampshire under real pressure on Tuesday - thanks to what could be one of his last centuries for Durham.

The Newcastle-born righthander hit 145 from the Riversiders' biggest score of the season, 421.

Hampshire's close of play 119-3 was a better reflection of an uneven, turning pitch, so Muchall hopes his side can push on and wrap up victory in the final two days.

"They've been under a lot of pressure this year but they've got some guys in their batting lineup who can bat a long time," Muchall told the Chronicle.

"We know what (former Durham captain) Will Smith can do and Michael Carberry's got a triple century to his name so we'll need to take some quick wickets and put some pressure on. Hopefully if we can get on a bit of a roll they'll fold.

"There's a bit of assistance from the pitch so even if they do get a bit of a partnership we're still in the game. The ball goes quite soft so it was hard to get it through the infield.

"We should get a first-innings lead but we've still got some good batsmen to get past."

Muchall faced 297 balls in his marathon innings, then revealed afterwards he has been told not to expect a new contract from Durham for next season.

"I had a bit of a meeting with the coach (Jon Lewis) this week and he said it would be unlikely I would get a contract at the end of the season, so that put a bit of pressure on me as well," he said.

"It was nice to just put a reminder out that I've still got a few years left if they want me.

"They told me if job opportunities come up they're more likely not to give me a new contract than to renew it. I think I'm playing as well as I've ever played and I'm still winning the fitness tests so it was a bit of a kick in the teeth. …
