THE Kayak and Boat Competitions which were to have been held last Sunday were cancelled for safety reasons on the advice of the Newbiggin Lifeboat Crew.

The two competitions are in aid of the Newbiggin RNLI, Northumberland and are now both being held on Sunday, August 23. Registration headquarters and weigh-in are at the Newbiggin Lifeboat Station. Register from 7am.

The Kayak Competition is from 8am to noon with weigh-in up to 1pm.

The Boat Competition fishing is from 8am to 1pm with weigh-in to 2pm. The Boat Competition is sponsored by Sports & Leisure, Blyth. Telephone 01670 365980. Anglers fishing the Boat Compettion can register on Saturday 22 at Sports & Leisure, Blyth, but must weigh in on the day of the match at the Newbiggin Lifeboat Station.

Entry to either competition is PS10 all classes. These are Heaviest Single Fish competitions. There are two excellent prize lists. Please note that there is a boundary of three miles to sea. Competitors will be asked to bring any unwanted fish to shore (over size limit please). These will be given to members of the public in exchange for a donation to the RNLI.

Also as part of National Fishing Month there are two "Kids' Crab Catching Competitions".

The first is on Sunday, August 2 on the Wear beside the Glass Centre in Sunderland. The other is on ther Tyne on Sunday, August 16 next to the Copthorne Hotel in Newcastle.

Both competitions are fishing from 2pm to 4pm and entry is free. There are two age categories - up to 12 years and 12 to 17 years.

There are some good prizes to be won. The winners will be the youngsters with the most number of crabs caught. No rods, reels or hooks to be used - hand lines and baits will be supplied. Competitors are asked to bring a bucket or similar container to keep the crabs alive, so that they can be returned to the water.

Bait will be kindly supplied by Bait Box, plus chocolates by Thorntons and crisps by Walkers.

These two events have been well supported over the last number of years and the youngest competitor so far has been three years of age. The mums and dads - and grandparents - seem to have as much fun as the youngsters. …
