I visit family near Toronto every August, and normally book with Air Transat from Gatwick as soon as seats go on sale. My relatives say a couple more airlines are starting flying from there next year. So should I wait to see if they're any cheaper? Neil Bowden, Purley TORONTO has far more flights from London than any other Canadian city. Air Canada and British Airways compete from Heathrow, and earn very profitable fares during the summer -- this year a fortnight's return leaving Heathrow on August 1 will cost close to PS1,000. Canadian budget firm Air Transat is the only airline flying from Gatwick. Most of the time its fares are slightly cheaper than the more familiar scheduled carriers.

Next year, though, life will get very interesting at Gatwick. Three airlines will be competing for the Toronto route. Air Canada's budget offshoot, Rouge, is launching services from Gatwick next May -- as is its Canadian arch-rival, WestJet, which is moving into the mainstream UK transatlantic market after trying out a Glasgow-Halifax link this summer. …
