Grand final: 1st Jason Crump, 2nd Jake Allen, 3rd Alan Macdonald, 4th Damien Koppe

SPEEDWAY bikes roared back to life at the Rockhampton Showgrounds for the MEM Handlebar Heroes on Friday and Saturday nights.

More than 20 competitors headlined the program, four weeks out from the Australian Senior Track Championships in Taree, New South Wales.

Leading the charge of the frontrunners was three-time world champion Jason Crump, who came out of retirement for the two-night speedway spectacular.

The 39-year-old, who claimed world titles in 2004, 2006 and 2009, took out the top prize ahead of Queensland up-and-comer Jake Allen, Alan Macdonald and UK-based Australian professional Damien Koppe (Sheffield).

"It was pretty tight all the way through the rounds with Alan Macdonald beating Jason twice over his 13 races," event organiser Bill Warwick-Day said.

The meet, which offered more than $10,000 in prize money, invited solo racing back to Rockhampton for the first time in over a decade. …
