Man Pleads Guilty to Firearms Charge; Had Fled Kansas for Jacksonville after Felony Child Sex Convictions

Article excerpt

A 43-year-old Jacksonville man pleaded guilty Friday to firearm possession after he was convicted of felony child-sex offenses in Kansas, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Daniel Todd Manning faces up to 10 years in federal prison when he is sentenced and has remained in federal custody since his April 30, 2014, arrest in Jacksonville, prosecutors said.

According to court documents, Manning was found guilty in Kansas on July 26, 2013, on multiple counts of indecent liberties with a child. Before his sentencing, he fled to Jacksonville, prosecutors said. Because Manning was a convicted sex offender and had fled from supervision, Kansas authorities issued a warrant for his arrest.

Jacksonville officials - including the U.S. Marshals Service - discovered Manning's Jacksonville house and entered it April 30, 2014, to search for him. During the search, they saw several rifles in a display case in Manning's bedroom, along with a handgun inside a night stand next to his bed, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Manning hid in the attic and remained there as the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office SWAT team seized five rifles, two shotguns and a pistol. Hours later, Manning surrendered, saying later that he brought all of the guns with him when he fled from Kansas to avoid sentencing, prosecutors said.

The man ran west on Normandy, police said.

The robbery suspect is described as a white male in his mid-30s, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot and 195 to 210 pounds, police said. He was last seen wearing a dark blue shirt, jeans, hat, sunglasses and white gloves.
