Jags' CB Harris Finding His Way; Third-Year Player Making Good Progress

After missing his rookie season because of a back injury and struggling to catch up with the speed of the game last year, Jaguars cornerback Jeremy Harris entered this offseason looking to shed the idea he was overmatched in the NFL.

Harris, 24, has yet to prove he can carve a niche as part of the team's secondary, yet during the spring, he grew increasingly comfortable with a new - and surprising - label: Leader?

Yep, teammates and coaches were talking about Harris that way this summer even though he has little game experience.

"What I've heard from how he was a year ago to how he is now, they say he has turned over a new leaf," said cornerback Davon House, who was signed away from Green Bay in the offseason to help fix the Jaguars' secondary. "He's been out there making plays, and he really looks fluid over there. To me, he looks like a guy that's five or six years in."

House is still just getting to know Harris, but defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker knows him well. Walker has a strong grasp on the development of Harris after coaching him at New Mexico State before the two reunited with the Jaguars.

During the offseason program, Walker liked what he saw from Harris, a 2012 seventh-round pick.

"His technique has improved, he's made some plays," Walker said. "so I thought he's really made quite a jump from last year to where he is right now."

Harris will need to make another big jump (or jumps) when the Jaguars return to the practice field July 31 for training camp. Harris is likely fighting for the fifth and final cornerback spot.

Working in Harris' favor is, at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, he meets the physical requirements that coach Gus Bradley wants in a cornerback. Also, during the OTAs and minicamp, Harris showed a willingness to compete that Bradley had been hoping to see. …
