WHEN a comedian comes to town and shows a little bit of local knowledge, it's always a big tick in the box for me.

But after Alan Carr referenced The Gazette, showed an interest in the Parmo, lemon tops and Redcar, and knowledge of local pubs - he was on to a real winner.

So much so, that he got away with being very cheeky indeed during his gig at Middlesbrough Town Hall.

"What's all this I read in The Gazette about Teesside wanting to be City of Culture?" he quipped. "And with your new PS30m ski centre too, oooh, get you!" he added, in his usual camp style.

But as is always the case with the goofy, bespectacled comic, what starts as a compliment quickly turns into a bitchy "Meow!" moment.

"I tell you what Middlesbrough, if you get City of Culture I will come here and ski naked down your new ski slope, how about that? …
