IF MY mate Steve Izzeard and I enter the Great Endeavour Rally again, we'll be much better prepared.

We were 74km into this year's rally when we took a tumble off the side of the road.

We thought it might be over then and there, but we got the car up and it didn't look too bad.

But other mechanical problems soon followed.

We lost all of our oil ...we had a rookie error where we put the mounting plate and the batch plate on the sump and scrubbed it for too long.

That was enough to put a hole in it. Everything started rattling, and we lost it all.

We put steel putty on the sump and were back on the road again.

But then the thermo fans on our 1984 Mitsubishi Sigma gave way.

We pulled up at a servo and there was steam coming out of the bonnet everywhere, and we thought, 'oh no, we haven't turned the thermo on', but then realised it was on. …
