Joining Cats Was Easy Decision, Says Coates; Bond with Advocaat Convinced Star to Stay

SEBASTIAN Coates insists he had no hesitation in leaving Liverpool for Sunderland this summer after earning himself a move to Wearside in the final five weeks of last season.

The Uruguayan spent last season on loan with the Black Cats but looked all set to return to Anfield after struggling to break into the Sunderland side due to injury and the fact he was behind John O'Shea, Wes Brown and Santiago Vergini in the central defensive pecking order.

However, the arrival of Dick Advocaat as head coach towards the end of the season changed all that and, with Brown injured, the Dutchman discarded Vergini in favour of Coates for the final six games of the season.

Coates repaid him with a series of solid displays and that convinced Sunderland to spend PS2m to sign the 24-year-old on a permanent basis.

Coates said: "When I first came here last year I just did it to play games and recover from my injuries.

"I did not think about making it permanent. For me, it was a tough season but playing in the last six games was great.

"It was an easy decision to come back because I know the manager, my team-mates, the club and the supporters. It was really easy.

"The last month of the season changed everything but that is football. It was a great month for me and of course that was the best bit of the season for me.

"It was not certain I would leave Liverpool this summer but I always thought I would have to speak with the club and see what the situation was.

"I knew it was a great opportunity to come to Sunderland and play regularly in the Premier League. That is why I'm here.

"You have to take those chances and I hope I have the opportunity to play regularly."

Coates played in the Copa America tournament with Uruguay this summer which meant he returned to pre-season training later than most of his teammates. …
