PIRATE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED FOR OCTOBER WEEKEND

The Fernandina Pirates Club has announced its first-ever Fernandina Pirate Festival, set for Friday, Oct. 9-Sunday, Oct. 11, in the city. The weekend's events begin with a Pirates March, then a pirates festival on Saturday and Sunday at the Atlantic Avenue Recreational Center, and a Saturday evening Pirates Ball with dinner, a costume contest and dancing to live music.

STORY SLAM SET FOR SEPT. 25

The Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library's second annual Amelia Island Story Slam begins 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Burns Hall at St. Peter's Church, 801 Atlantic Ave. This year's storytellers are Dickie Anderson, Carey Dresser, John Drew, Arlene Filkoff, Neil Frink and Diana Herman. Guests cast votes for their favorites and raise funds to help furnish the Fernandina Beach Library. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased online at fernandinaFOL.org or at the Fernandina Beach Library, 25 N. Fourth St.

AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE

Park of the Palms Retirement Community, 691 Hebron Ave., Keystone Heights, will host an AARP Smart Driver Course, 8:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m., on Thursday. This is a refresher course in safe driving, designed specifically for drivers 50 years and older. Anyone can take the course, whether a member of AARP or not. ST. AUGUSTINE ENGINEERING FIRM GETS HISTORIC SPRING PARK POOL PROJECT

The Green Cove Springs City Council selected Matthew Design Group Inc., a professional civil engineering firm based in St. Augustine, to design and oversee the estimated $2.1 million reconstruction of the historic Spring Park swimming pool, replacement of the pool house and related enhancement of the natural mineral spring at the heart of the park.
