MANY of you will be filled with excitement at the start of the new football season.

However, I would like to take the opportunity to look at a format of the game which is growing rapidly in the area.

Futsal is the fastest-growing indoor sport in the world and there are now more than 90 FA Futsal Fives Leagues across the country.

Northumberland FA has run local futsal competitions for the past two years and supported teams to go on to play in the national FA Futsal Cup - most notably Team Northumbria, who reached the grand final of the Women's FA Futsal Cup at the Olympic Park's Copper Box Arena in 2014.

The Newcastle Futsal League is an adult male competition played at Walker Activity Dome.

After a close season, leaders Fica Futsal and NUFC Kicks met in their final game tied on points, Fica Futsal just ahead on goal difference.

Goals from Nick Lord and Garrick Murphy-Collins helped give Fica an early lead but high-scoring NUFC Kicks came fighting back to go into half-time at 4-4 thanks to strikes from Michael Leech and John Woodford. …
