GARDENING is Barbara Steinke's lifelong passion. Her desire to have a beautiful colourful garden all through the year is truly amazing with the additional bonus of a weed-free, nicely, manicured lawn.

"My love of gardening will never stop. You will always find me outside gardening whether it is poisoning weeds, mulching, pruning, watering, fertilising or planting," says Barbara.

Barbar first became interested in gardening when she married and moved to Imbil 58 years ago.

Once started, her love of gardening just kept growing. She lived there for 41 years before moving to Southside.

Having good soil definitely helps and encourages you to keep going, she said.

There is no excuse for having a boring garden if gardeners take on Barbara's approach of growing annuals (dianthus, pansies, poppies, stocks, snapdragons, cosmos, phlox, hollyhock, larkspur and petunias), plants of different heights (azalea, browallia, tibouchina, hibiscus, camellia, jacaranda, and poinciana), foliage plants (geraniums, coleus, cannas and liquid amber), and textures (conifers).

These are just some of the plants in Barbara's garden.

"There's something magical about the first blooms of spring," she said.

"They bring enjoyment and excitement every time I walk outside to the front garden along Sorensen Road.

"If you are interested in planting hardy annuals, try petunias, statice, snapdragons and alyssum."

There is impressive liquid amber in her garden too. The deciduous tree produces spectacular orange, red and maroon autumn foliage.

"Liquid ambers generally perform better in the colder climates, such as Toowoomba," she said.

Barbara's home is surrounded by colour and interest through all four seasons. She achieves that through designing and choosing plants that will flower in the different seasons. …
