Defendant: 'I'd Rather a Jail Term Thanks'

THOUGH offered a period of probation, a woman who pleaded guilty before Toowoomba Magistrates Court to assaulting a shopping centre security officer said she'd prefer a suspended jail sentence.

Amanda Cecile Coleborn, 39, told Magistrate Graham Lee she intended leaving Toowoomba in a couple of months to tour Australia with her partner and would rather have a jail sentence hanging over her head than remaining in the city to complete a probation order.

Police prosecutor Des Neijens told the court Coleborn had become involved in an argument with a man outside a fruit shop at an Ashmore shopping centre on November 24, last year, prompting a security officer to intervene.

As she was being escorted from the centre, she became abusive toward the officer and swung a number of punches at him which he fended off.

However, she had then dug her fingernails into his arm and scratched him, causing his arm to bleed, Senior Constable Neijens said. …
