T'S week three of the summer holidays.

IThe kids are getting restless and so is my wife. Mary's a teacher so I do find it hard to muster up much sympathy even though she is the one stuck at home with a four-year and a six-year-old. And it's not as if the weather's been much help.

Luckily SuperDad is here to save the day. I'll take a day off work, swoop in and fun them out to the max. And I'll treat Mary too. It's the least she and her 13 weeks' holiday a year deserve.

The Beehive, in Earsdon, is made for days like this.

It's not far from us in Whitley Bay and we've been a few times to let the boys loose in the 'secret garden',' a huge beer garden with a wooden fort, which puts most parks to shame.

REVIEW FOOD By Jamie We've eaten there only once or twice and the food has always been spot on, if not a touch on the pricey side. Perhaps because of that I've viewed it as somewhere to go to treat ourselves, rather than allow the kids to accept it as part of our routine.

The kids were delighted when we packed them in the car and told them where we were going. For them it's about the garden and that wooden play frame. For me and Mary it's always about the food.

Although a large pub from the outside, the Beehive is made up of small rooms and it doesn't take many customers for it to get full.

So after letting the kids have a good play, we sat ourselves down and ordered.

Jacob and Benjamin both had the starter of homemade garlic bread with cheese which for PS2.50 was excellent value. Two thick slices with plenty of cheese, yet not too much to disguise the garlic. Because of the size of the slices, the boys only needed one each and me and Diffley Mary had the other - handy because nothing on the starter menu for us took our fancy.

Jacob chose the burger while Benjamin had chicken nuggets. …
