WITH superb views looking west-wards towards the Pennines, Borrowby is an ideal starting point for exploring low-lying tracts of land beside the Cod Beck.

Starting from the village hall in the centre of Borrowby we walk past the cross, left, and make our way down Park Lane past West Brae, right. Just beyond Demerrick we turn right through a metal field gate and cross the field to pass the white walls of St Helen's Cottage, right.

Joining a lane beside the cottage, we bear left between hedges to pass through a series of four gates on the downhill approach to a plank footbridge and stile.

After crossing we bear left past farm buildings at Carrodale and past the next field gate we turn right to cross a stile.

Within 20 yards another gate leads to a pathway along the ridge below Borrowby Banks, right, before a sharp left bend takes us down the slope to a causeway over Cod Beck.

Continuing ahead beside a wire fence on our right, we pass close to an electricity pylon before crossing a wooden footbridge to reach the public road opposite Old Hall Farm.

At this point we turn right along the road and just after Crosby Bridge Farm we turn left through a double field gate.

Our route runs ahead across a beck and then heads diagonally right across the next field where we walk ahead to the boundary hedge.

Turning right we make our way towards Legates Plantation where a double field gate leads to Roman Road.

We turn left along this wide grassy route between hedges with views of wooded slopes, north of Borrowby, on our left and continue for almost 1.5 miles before reaching farm buildings at Crosby Grange, right.

At the end of the range of buildings we turn left along the stony track and down a slope to cross a narrow beck.

Continuing ahead along the left hand field edge we follow the left bend past a ford to reach a metal gate and footbridge over Cod Beck. …
