Motorists Given a Holiday from All Those Roadworks

MOTORISTS can expect a slightly smoother drive during the usual Bank Holiday traffic snarl-up thanks to a temporary break on roadworks.

Highways England has called a halt to current works on motorways and major roads across the North East, as well as in Yorkshire, to enable drivers to make the most of their long weekend getaway.

In all, 432 miles of roadworks will be suspended - or else completed - throughout the country this coming weekend. In the North East and Yorkshire that means 14 sets of roadworks will be stopped by 6am on Friday while workers will make sure they complete 24 other sets.

That leaves nine sets of roadworks still remaining over the Bank Holiday. A spokesman for Highways England, the Governmentowned company responsible for the country's motorways and major A roads, said as many roadworks as possible are always removed at busy times.

Its director of customer operations, Simon Sheldon-Wilson, said: "To help road users enjoy this Bank Holiday weekend, we're completing or suspending over 400 miles of roadworks on motorways and major trunk roads. …
