Pressure off Karanka as Boro Win ATWEDNESDAY

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 1 MIDDLESBROUGH 3 AITOR Karanka was delighted at the win at Sheffield Wednesday whch relieved the mounting pressure on Teesside.

Middlesbrough's manager was coming under criticism from supporters for the first time after a sticky start and a shock home defeat to lowly Bristol City last week.

However, his side bounced back with a polished performance and an emphatic 3-1 win at Hillsborough, long a hoodoo ground for Boro.

Adam Reach stabbed home a firsthalf opener then, after the Owls levelled early in the second half, Boro stepped up a gear to seal it with strikes from Diego Fabbrini and Cristhian Stuani.

"I am delighted and I am proud," said the Spaniard as his team headed into the international break in sixth spot and with just one defeat in seven in the first flurry of fixtures.

"We had a defeat last weekend but this team gives you a reaction and this game was difficult because it's a hard place to play, but we did well.

"We have amazing players and an amazing squad."

"People reminded me about Middlesbrough's record at this ground but the players' jobs on the pitch are more important than what happened in the past.

"It was a very important victory for us. It's more than just three points, especially after our defeat on Saturday at home.

"We needed to show everybody this team is not the one which played against Bristol City last week.

"We played well in the first half but then they scored and the game changed, but the reaction after the equaliser was amazing and I'm really pleased for all of them."

Boro dominated the first half and had a string of good shots blocked or deflected behind with Reach twice having good efforts saved - but Reach made the breakthrough just before the break as a corner bounced about the crowded box and he pounced to stab home.

Wednesday fought back after the break and after heavy pressure grabbed a leveller on 64 minutes as a square ball found Marco Matias on the edge of the box and his shot looped up off defender Ben Gibson and dipped into the top corner. …
