THANK goodness spring has arrived and we women of a certain age can shake off our scarves.

Not that there is anything wrong with scarves - they are one heck of a gorgeous accessory if tied in the tres chic way French women manage so easily.

But it is just that a lot of us old dears do the layering look with scarves.

We let them dangle over our sagging bosoms so they give us an air of being an eccentric art

teacher.

Loose layers are something else I think give women of a certain age a look of a slightly bewildered ceramics tutor.

As for layers combined with dangly scarves, well, we may as well head to the art studio and see if we can teach something.

I knew a woman who did layers and scarves and Dame Edna glasses all at once.

She was a fair dinkum fabulously eccentric creative writing

teacher.

I was in her class for years so I say this with authority.

One year back in the '80s she gave up the layers and the scarves and went with the fashion du jour, the all-in-one body suit worn beneath trousers or skirts. …
