I CAN'T remember a world championship in surfing as close as this year's World Surf League.

At the top of the men's leader board you can throw a blanket over the top five places, with a number of others only a good result from being in the thick of the world championship race.

One thing I start to do at this time of year is look at the rounds surfers will take out when it is all over. There are 11 events on the tour.

We have seen seven rounds of action so far.

By the season end, only nine scores will count. Two are taken out of the total.

I know it is still only early, with four events left, but I have already looked at what it would mean taking the worst scores out now.

Nothing much changes in terms of position, but things are so close.

Adriano de Souza will still hold the lead, 250 points in front of Mick Fanning. …
