WHEN three lifesavers saw a young man trying to keep his head above water while treading through a strong current they thought of nothing else but swimming out to save him.

It's these actions of the three Emu Park Surf Life Saving Club members that saw them awarded medals of excellence in Brisbane last month.

Geoff Maxwell, Melissa Weber and patrol captain Jon Wall were patrolling Emu Park beach one Saturday in November last year when a man got into trouble in deep water.

Jon said the three of them worked as a team to help the man to safety.

"The guy chased a football into the water but it got windy and he went out very deep," he said.

"He got caught out at sea and was really worn out. Geoff spotted him first and swam out to him, while Melissa went out on the board.

"I ran up the beach to meet them there and brought him ashore. We took him up to the clubhouse to monitor him as he had taken in a lot of water and had an erratic heart rate so I called the ambulance. …
