HELLO YELLOW: The sky has fluctuated between dull, grey and leaden on one hand and ethereal blue with fluffy pink and apricot clouds on the other.

We've had torrential downpours giving way to bright sunshine in the space of an hour.

Thank goodness for hot-hued flowers that have shone out during the greyest days and given a hint of optimism among the gathering gloom.

Yellow is such a glorious though under-rated colour. Some refined gardeners shy away from it but in the spring and again now as autumn approaches, it is one of the most important constituents of the garden.

In spring it is bright and fresh, now it becomes warmer mixed with orange and bronze.

We're planting out a few spare pots of Rudbeckia fulgida x deamii to help the garden resound with yellow.

It is such an easy plant but extremely rewarding and (touch wood) never seems to suffer from pests or diseases.
