WHEN I was growing up, my dad had a workbench in the garage. It didn't take up too much room, though. It slotted in alongside the bikes and boxes and other paraphernalia that meant our garage would never experience the joy of housing an actual car.

It was a small work space, but meticulously organised, with tiny drawers filled with different sized nails and screws, and a wall where he hung the rest of his tools.

Pride of place in his workspace was a lathe, a heavy metal contraption that grasped pieces of wood in its firm jaws and spun it round, while Dad, to my young eyes, simply held sharp ended-tools against it and watched as curls of wood cascaded to the floor.

What started out as a square of nothing was transformed into a lamp base, a light pull or simply a beautiful shape to be varnished and put on a table. Wood was something to be wondered at, its curves and lines traced with a finger and admired.

It has long been thought that surrounding yourself with natural materials like wood and stone calm us and give us a sense of grounding.

I agree and would add to that it also makes me feel like I'm truly at home.
