ALAN Shearer and myself are privileged to be part of Newcastle United's legendary No 9 Club.

We scored a packet of goals for the Mags and were respected by our opponents because we were hard guys not to be messed about.

We took physical assaults all right, but we could hand out a bit of stick as well. That is necessary in any top attacker.

However if Aleksandar Mitrovic wants to join our Magpie club then he had better wise up pretty quickly. Because at the moment he is nothing more than a liability.

He goes round showing his studs and getting disciplined for it - he hasn't played two hours of football yet and he's acquired two yellows and a red.

That isn't bad luck. It isn't biased referees. It's stupidity. Stupid because you're leaving team-mates right in the mire.

Right now Mitrovic has to sit out United's next three matches away to West Ham, home to Watford, and home to Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup. United didn't pay PS13m for him to be a spectator.

What concerns me is the public support offered by Steve McClaren who went on about Mitrovic not intending the tackle against Arsenal in the first quarter of an hour. That the red card was "harsh." And that the trouble is referees watch Match of the Day and hear all about Mitrovic's antics and the Press make it worse by also highlighting them.

Well, I hope Steve is taking a different line privately because this guy is costing him dearly at the moment. Costing him when McClaren desperately needs his first Premier League win. He isn't going to get it playing three quarters of the game with 10 men.

No, the fault lies totally with the player. Granted fans love a hard man - but not a stupid man.

Those in the game knew what Mitrovic did last weekend was a red card offence. …
