WORK is set to start on refurbishing one of the busiest stations on the Metro system the day after the Great North Run.

Metro passengers can next week find out more about plans to refurbish Central Station ahead of work starting later this month.

Staff from Nexus and Metro will be holding events at the busy station on Tuesday September 8 and Thursday September 10 to give people the latest news on the project.

They will be in the ticket concourse between 7.30am and 10.30am, then again between 3.30pm and 6.30pm, to answer questions about the work.

Building work will start on Monday, September 14, the day after the Great North Run.

The PS6m project - partly funded through a contribution from the Government's Single Local Growth Fund - is one of a number to improve regional 'gateways' which also includes plans for a new transport hub for South Shields town centre partly funded by Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro.

Passengers have played a part in designing the new look for the station - choosing a distinctive light blue colour to be used on feature walls throughout the building in a public vote. …
