GOSFORTH'S Rhian Purves opened her cross-country campaign in the same manner as last year.

Twelve months ago the Northumberland Schools' champion led the field home to win the under-15 girls race in Sunderland Harriers' promotion in Farringdon.

Competing in the same age group this time round, Purves again dominated the 1.8-mile event to win comfortably by 29 seconds, with Houghton's Eva Hardie finishing in second place and Issy Robinson (North Shields Poly) a close-up third.

In the boys race in the same age group, victory went to Morpeth's Taylor Glover with Gosforth's Patrick Donald improving from seventh place last year to take the runner-up award ahead of Blyth's Josh Fiddaman.

The under-13 races were over the same 1.8-mile course and it was a Morpeth one-two in the girls contest.

Holly Peck had an eight-second cushion at the line over team-mate Rhiannon Hedley, who held off Birtley's Nicole Phillips by just two seconds in the race for second place. …
