ARE you the best company in the North East? The time to prove that has come with the opening of entries for the 2016 North East Business Awards.

The awards, run by The Journal and The Gazette with support from the North East Chamber of Commerce, recognise the best businesses in a range of sectors in all corners of the region, with one firm taking the ultimate prize of North East Company of the Year.

That winner will take a place in an illustrious list of former winners that includes some of the biggest names in North East business, including Greggs, Nissan, Fujitsu and Esh Group.

Last year the prize was taken by Durham-based kitchenware and homeware supplier Andrew James, a company run by two cousins that had gone from a start-up in their garage to turning over more than PS17m, employing nearly 100 people and exporting around the world.

The awards consist of three heats: Tyneside and Northumberland, | Durham, Sunderland and South |Tyneside Teesside. |Winners in 11 categories at each of the three heats then compete in the regional final, being held at Hardwick Hall in Sedgefield on April 21.

Andrew James - winners of the Durham and Wearside company of the year before going on to take the regional title - also won the digital and social media award and celebrated their triumph with a number of the company's staff.

Company director James Buckle said: "Everyone at Andrew James was incredibly proud to win North East Company of the Year for 2015.

Winning the award was a great honour for everyone concerned, and we consider it a testament to the hard work everyone has put in over the years. "There were so many worthy companies nominated last year it made it all the more special when we were named winners. We have been able to make use of the Company of the Year in a number of promotions and feel it has had a very positive impact on customer perceptions of our company. "Winning the awards also increased our profile regionally, with media coverage of the event putting us in the public eye.

"We would encourage all companies to get involved in the North East Business Awards.

It is a great event, and really brings local businesses together. The North East Business Awards allow business leaders and their staff to learn about other organisations they may not usually have the opportunity to interact with.

"Since the win, we have finalised plans and designs for our new distribution centre and headquarters.

"We are also pushing forward with ambitious plans to expand our product range and begin selling into new territories. We are certainly looking to the future with great excitement." The awards recognise sectors including manufacturing, digital and social media, services and creative, while prizes also exist for the fastest-growing companies, the best exporters and those showing the greatest innovation. …
