CLINT Smith knows all too well the importance of special-needs schools for autism because his two young children Emmit and Maci live with the condition.

All About Autism in Landsborough is the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast and just after a semester of operation, Emmit's regular school progress has improved out of sight.

Mr Smith said Emmit, 6, had been non-verbal less than two years ago, about the time he was introduced to All About Autism founder Lizzie Vaughan.

"He couldn't string words together, let alone sentences," he said.

"Now he's writing, speaking well and even singing.

"Beforehand, he was just at school, just learning curriculum, not fitting in, struggling with the workload and getting irritable.

"His school work and ability at school has gone through the roof - his teachers are raving about how good he's going."

The issue for children on the autism spectrum is that they cannot cope with the regular school curriculum, and they can easily fall through the cracks. …
