Runners-Up Are Really Important Too

ON SATURDAY night the Silver Spurs Western Performance and Quarter Horse Club held its annual high point awards presentation night.

The weeks leading up to this event have been quite hectic as I sorted the event results, totalled up the points, followed up on perpetual trophies to be returned, negotiated with suppliers and ordered trophies and made individual, laminated certificates. There was also the dinner menu to be selected and ordered - all the while hoping that everyone who wanted to attend had indicated their attendance so that sufficient food could be provided. As well as the presentation night, there was an "A" class show to be organised, promoted and managed. While hobbling around on a not-yet-healed-broken-leg, I have been quite busy!

Like everything I do, I wanted the night to be perfect. While I wanted the winners to be celebrated, I also wanted the runners-up to be acknowledged. They were competitors who had also put in the hard yards. My family might find it unbelievable, but I was (almost) speechless when a competitor asked what the runners-up would get. …
