A SPECIAL birthday party is being thrown in memory of much-loved Middlesbrough man Paul Murphy.

Hundreds of people are expected to turn out to celebrate what would have been Paul's 35th birthday on October 16.

Paul, the manager of the popular Grubbs Diner on Newport Road, who was described as "heart and soul" of the town, died suddenly from a heart attack in June.

He had been receiving hospital treatment after contracting pneumonia two weeks before and his shock death left his family reeling.

Ahead of his funeral service, more than 100 people gathered outside the cafe to pay their respects.

Carol, of Ammerston Road, central Middlesbrough, said her son lived his short life to the full.

"He was really big into his parties," she said. "He should have been in Mexico right now, it was all paid for."

Carol, 54, and her husband Stewart, 55, are expecting up to 200 people to join the party upstairs at Yates in Middlesbrough, just down the road from Grubbs Diner, at 7pm on October 16.
