Curious Calf Gets in Deep Trouble Down Dark Well

CURIOSITY would have gotten the better of this calf had it not been for firefighters dedicated to rescuing him from a well.

Sampson the calf is one bovine lucky to be alive after he got stuck at the bottom of a 10m well on Tuesday morning.

Geham farmer Chris Cristaldi was walking past by chance when he noted Sampson's mother distressed and without her one-week-old calf.

"It was lucky I had the day off," Mr Cristaldi said.

"I saw the mother on her own near where the well is and thought it was a bit unusual she wasn't with the herd."

The last place he thought Sampson could be was the well.

"I thought, 'surely not, he can't be in there'," Mr Cristaldi said.

"But I stuck my head in there and thought, 'you've got to be bloody joking' and sure enough he was in there."

He called the firefighters, if not for a rescue mission then for some advice.

"I didn't hold out much hope (after seeing him in the well)," he said. …
